Clark County Norwegians
Clark S.Dakota
Updated 3/8/2003--Send additions to Gordon C. Meyer gmeyer@itctel.com
Since my ancestors all came from Norway and that has been my area of research. I went through the two centennial books from Clark county and extracted the settlers who in the bio's had a clue of where they might be from. I and with the help of others from the NORWAY-LIST have been able to add more information on where they came from in Norway. This is a work in progress, so if you are able to add to this information PLEASE let me know so I can update it. I have put this information in a WORD document that you can download, just click on Clark County Norwegians. Happy Hunting!!!

Engen Peter B was born 1877 in Neraker, Norway,(We are checking on this name some think it should probably be Meraker) He was the son of Peter P b. 1844 and Marit Graslie. He came to U.S. at the age of one. Peter B married Lena Albertine Larson
Peder P. Engen , one of the oldest residents of Clark County, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs Andrew Anderson, shortly before 4 PM on Sunday (Easter Sunday)
Peder (Peter) was born at Singssas, Norway, on June 4, 1844 and at the time of his death, had reached the ripe old age of 86 years, 10 months and 1 day. He grew to manhood in his native country and Trond-hjern, Norway, on October 2 1876. He was united in marriage with Miss Marit Graslie.
Mr. Engen came to America in 1878 and located at Lansing, Iowa where he made his home for for a short time, and in 1880 he came to Dakota territory with his young family and was among the pioneer homesteaders and builders of this new country. For several years they lived on the homestead, but in 1892 they moved to Clark.
Peter was the father of 9 children, three preceding him in death dying in infancy. Mrs Engen also passing away here in December, 1929. The surviving children were Peter B. Engen, Ben (Burnt) Engen, Harold O. Engen, of Sioux Falls SD. Mrs. Gena Anderson, Mrs, Matilda Rasmussen and Mrs Pauline Myers of Clark. There are also a number of grandchildren and a host of old time friends left to mourn the departure of the splendid old man. For a man of advanced age, Mr. Engen enjoyed general good health and was active around town until but a few years ago, when he eased up some and since the death of his life long partner . Peter had been making his home with his children where the the best of care and courtesy was shown him during his declining years.
Mr. Engen was a member ot the Lutheran church and the funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon with services at the church conducted by the pastor Rev. Vold, assisted by Rev. Distad and internment made in Rose Hill cemetery, a concourse of friends attended to pay their last earthly respects to one they had known and respected for so long.
I found Peder (Peter) in the 1880 Census and this was at Canoe Township Winneshiek North east Iowa, The children were Peter Bunherd (3years old)and Burnt (Ben) Edward 9/12 yrs old. (not sure about the spelling the transcripts were not to clear) Peter was 36 years old Marit (Marie)(Mary) was 22 years old. --- Then I found them in the Census of 1922, Peter was 75 years old and Marie was 64, they just had two children listed the rest must have left home already, but the two boys at home were Ben (32 yrs) Harold O. (22 years) Due to a question from Bjorn Neraker I looked up the above information and posted it on this site, send any additions or corrections to Gordon Meyer gmeyer@itctel.com.

Larson Glen L This information was submitted to me by Glen and I left it just as he wrote it, it is very informative, and accurate. If anyone has any additions or corrections contact me at gmeyer@itctel.com
My wife was a Wika, so I have
researched her family.
Niels Torkelson Wika and his wife Serine Larsdtr Saetre
immigrated to the U.S. im 1866 on the ship the Victor Emmanuel(Bergen to Quebec)
with eight children-Torkel, Lars, Tollef, Marthines, Steen, Niels, Marthe, and
Olai. Sievert(my wife's great grandfather)was born in Illinois.
The family was in Morris, Illinois, Ossian,Iowa, and Canton before
moving to Clark.
Niels Torkelsen Wika was born in Skanevik(1820), and his wife Serina was
born(1828) on Halsnoy(Fjelberg). The family was living at the gard Nymark,
Fjelberg, Hordaland in the 1865 census.
Also the Austin Wicks family comes from the same gard(farm) in Skanevik
Norway as Niels T. Wika. The spelling for the farm has changed
through the years. V's and W's are interchangeable. I believe the
gard is Vika today, but in 1801 it was written as Wiche. I have found no
connecting relation to the two families other than they at one time shared the
same area as their home.
As long as I am discussing Wika heritage, Nels S. Wika married Lydia Marie
Wee(1887). She was the younger sister of Cristine Dorthea Wee(1879). They
can be found in the 1900 census of Etne under the gard- aasen af
gaard vee.
Sievert N. Wika married Marit Johannesdtr Lee(1860). Marit was the older
sister of Marie Johannesdtr Lee(1870), Hans Lien's wife. The Lee's were
born in Lesja Norway and their family settled in Pierpont ,S.D. with some
of the children taking the Lee name and others taking the name Enstad. The Lee
family can be found in the 1875 census for Lesja, Oppland under the residence
Skraedderstuen.
Ben(Baard) Larson was born in 1854 in Fitjar, Norway. His family lived on the
farm Tvedte(Tveita). He married Anna Andersdtr Valvatne(Walvatne), who was born
in 1855 in Valvatne, Stord. they were married in 1876 and immigrated to Ossian,
Iowa(Clermont township,Fayette county). Ben and Anna had five children-Ida(Urdahl),
Bertha(Hinsvark), Lena(Engen), Amanda(Imsland), and Almer Larson.
Gudmund Larson(1863) was a younger brother of Ben(Baard) Larson and immigrated
to the U.S. in 1886, with his wife Gurine Johannesdtr(1868). Gurine was a
half sister to Mrs. Ben Larson. They had three sons- Lars, Illert, and Edwin.
Gudmund can be found in the 1865 census of Fitjar,Hordaland Norway on the Tvedte
Gard living with his family.
Ben(Baard) can be found in the 1865 census for Fitjar Norway living with his
grandparents(Lars Erikson) on the Fitje gard.
Andrew Kristofferson Lonning was born 1863 at Lonning Bommel(Bomlo) Norway. He
was a nephew to Mrs. Ben Larson. Andrew can be found in the 1865 census of
Finaas, Hordaland Norway on the Lonning gard. His father was Kristofer Aanenson.
Severt Benson was born in Aashiem, Skanevik. His name in the 1865 census was
Sjur Bjorneson. Sjur and Sever were some how interchangeable names, and it
appears somhow the Bjorneson was simplified to Benson.
You can find the family in the 1865 census of Skanevik, Hordaland under the gard
Aasheim. The family moved to Ossian Iowa and then Canton before moving to Clark.
Sever and Knud can be found in the 1880 census living in Canton
P.S.. I believe we share some Engen
relatives.
My dad knew them, but I am afraid all I know is their names.
This additional information was submitted by Glen L. Larson on March 4, 2008
I
found out that Marit Berntsdatter Graeslie (born 1857) and Peder B.(8months)
immigrated to the US from Trondheim on July 17th, 1878. The husband was not
listed on the same ship.
I found out that the Engen's and the Hinsvarks were both from the Singsas area
of Norway and were neighbors in Iowa. Somehow they met up with the Larson's and
married my grandfathers sisters.
