The Story of Joel McKee

A South Dakota Pioneer As Told By Patty Bookout (to Gordon Meyer)

Copyrighted 2005 for Clark county South Dakota and Gordon Meyer

Joel has a very interesting Ancestry History. The first entry in the genealogy section is listed "Robert McKee" Robert served in the Revolutionary War, and is thought to have been with George Washington at Valley Forge.

McKEE was born in 1858 in Kankakee County, Illinois, the 6th of 8 children of Anthony Scout McKee and Mary Low.  His great-grandfather was Robert McKee, born 11 Nov 1743 and died in Anthony Township, Montour, Pennsylvania on 27 Apr 1821. The birthplace of Robert is not yet known, but he migrated to Montour County in 1794 and located about a mile up the creek from Exchange, afterward moving to the Anthony Township area where he died. He served in the Revolutionary War and it is said he served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Joel’s great-grandmother was Nancy Agnes Craig born 1747 in Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania and died 27 Sep 1830 in Montour County, Pennsylvania. Robert and Agnes had 4 children, 3 of whom were John, James, and Elizabeth. John was born in 1783 and died in 1853 in Montour County. Elizabeth was born 1791 and died in 1843 also in Montour County.

 Upon the death of Anthony in 1876, Joel and his brother Leroy continued to work the family farm. Joel was still living at home in Otto Township, Kankakee, Illinois in 1883. In a letter his mother wrote to her oldest son, Sylvester, dated 26 Apr 1883, she wrote: “The boys have their oats in and are plowing for corn…..The boys have put a new wire fence around the pasture……Tommy McQuellin has gone to Dakota and has taken a claim of 160 acres of land, good land he says it is. He says it will all be taken soon.” And although we can only assume this Tommy McQuellin was a neighbor of theirs in Illinois, it might be that Joel may have gone to South Dakota to see his friend. In the Bureau of Land Records, we found a Thomas H. McQuillin homesteaded 160 acres in Myron Township, Faulk County, South Dakota and the patent was issued 10 Mar 1887. We do know from Joel’s obituary that he moved to Bradley, South Dakota in the fall of 1887.

Joel died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage and is buried in Prairie Hill Cemetery in Bradley.  In his Last Will and Testament dated 16 Feb 1915, he left one dollar and his love and affection to his siblings, Sylvester, Hattie, Seth and Emma.  Everything else he gave to his sister, Susan A. McKee who was living in Los Angeles, California at the time.  Susan was also his executrix.  We have been told that Susan suffered from Scarlet Fever as a child and may have been struck deaf and mute as a result.  She suffered from breast cancer in 1922 while living in California, and died 31 May 1924 while living with her sister, Mary Emily “Emma” McKee Stratton in Hillrose, Colorado.  Susan’s Will dated 5 Apr 1924, left one dollar and her love and affection to each of her siblings, Sylvester and Seth and to the children of her deceased brother, Roy (Leroy).  To her sister, Harriet E. McKee of Howe, Indiana, “the South 82 feet of Lot 5, Block 1, and the South 82 feet of Lot six, Block 1, of the town of Bradley, Clark County, South Dakota, and being the only real estate I own or am interested in, located within said town of Bradley….”   All of the rest of her estate including the farm located in Clark County, South Dakota, “which is legally described as, Lots l, 2, 3, and 4, of Section 18 in Township 118, North of Range 56 West and containing 161 acres” was given to her sister, Mary E. Stratton of Hillrose, Morgan, Colorado.  Mary was also appointed executrix.

Joel McKee died 21 Apr 1915 in Bradley, at age 57. His obituary was printed in the 29 Apr. 1915 edition of The Bradley Globe.
“The funeral services for the late Joel McKee were held at the Workmen hall on Friday afternoon at two o’clock. The hall was appropriately decorated and was nicely filled with friends who were called together to pay their last respects to their fellow townsman. Rev. E. B. Cooney of the Methodist Church, preached the funeral discourse. The members of the Workmen and I.O.O.F. lodges, of which he was an active member, attended in a body and marched to the cemetery where the latter lodge performed the last rites over the grave. The floral offerings were beautiful. Joel McKee was born to the union of Anthony and Mary Low McKee in 1858, at Kankakee, Ill., and died at his home in Bradley, S.D., on April 21st, 1915, aged 57 years. His parents were Methodists and at an early age he was baptized into that faith. He came to Bradley in the fall of ’87 and for years plied his trade of a carpenter. Many of the buildings destroyed by the fire some years ago were the result of his work here. He made this his home, running a small store here after the town was built up so that his line of work became slack. Being of a mechanical turn, he went east and engaged in the plumbing and waterworks business being sent to this state at the head of a gang a little later to install systems of waterworks by one of the large eastern firms. Later he gave up this work and came back to Bradley to engage in the grain business, owning elevators at James, Garden City, Wallace and Bradley. These he sold off one by one until the last two years he has been out of business. He was single, having never married, and leaves to mourn his death, two brothers, Sylvester McKee of Oakland, Cal., and Seth McKee of Simpson, Kan., and three sisters, Mrs. Hattie McKee of Howe, Ind., Mrs. W. S. Stratton of Boulder, Col., and Miss Susan McKee of Oakland, Cal., the latter being the only present at the funeral. Joel leaves a host of friends here, for his life was interwoven with the history of our little city. Always ready with a smile and cheery word for everyone, he had become a fixture in our community that it will be hard to get along without. A finer tribute could not have been paid than the presence of so many men at the funeral, fully seventy-five marching to the cemetery.”

Following his obituary was a Card of Thanks from his sister, Susan; and Resolutions from the Bradley Lodge No. 12, Ancient Order of United Workmen.  Also in the same paper under local news:  “Frank Dudley was over from Crandall on Friday to attend the Joel McKee funeral.”  “Ole Haugen of Crocker, was another Odd Fellow to attend the funeral of Joel McKee Friday.”  “Olaf Sjolie and Ole Rolland of Wallace, were here Friday to attend the Joel McKee funeral.  Both are Odd Fellows and marched with the local lodge.”  “Miss Susan McKee reached here Wednesday evening too late to see her brother alive.  She will remain for a couple of weeks before returning to California.”

1. History of Columbia and Montour Counties Pennsylvania" Battle - 1887 Anthony Township pg. 187) JACKSON P. MCKEE, farmer, P. O. Comly, was born in the place where he now resides in Anthony Township, Montour Co., PA, Oct. 12, 1830, son of James and Harriet (SCOUT) McKee, the latter a native of this county. Robert McKee, grandfather of our subject, came to what is now Montour County in 1794 and located about a mile up the creek from Exchange, afterward moving to the place where Jackson P. now resides and here lived until his death. He was married to Agnes Craig and died in 1832, his widow surviving him about 4 years; they are buried at the Derry Presbyterian Church. They had 4 children of whom only one, James, was married. Robert McKee served in the Revolutionary war. James McKee, father of our subject, was born in Chester County, PA and was the 3rd in order of age of the children born of Robert McKee. He was eight years of age when the family came to this county and when he grew up, his father, brothers and himself bought between 400 and 500 acres of land, of which Jackson P. now owns 195 acres. They found this land covered with a heavy growth of oak timber, and they struck the first ax into the improvement of this land and put up a log cabin on this place with the timber they had cut down in making the first clearing. James McKee died March 29, 1863, his wife having died in 1832. They were the parents of 11 children, of whom only two are living: James and Jackson P.; the latter being the only one in this county.
Our subject was married February 2, 1863 to Margaret Ellen, daughter of David Wilson, also a member of an early settler family and who is now living in Anthony Twp, this county. Mr. McKee learned the carpenter's trade which he followed one year. He was general agent for the Buckeye reaper when it first came out and followed that business three or four years, having entire control of their agents during that time. He was in Kankakee, IL 15 months and there owned land at that time. Mr. McKee's home is situated on Muncy Hill and it presents the finest view in PA, the valleys in Snyder, Union, Northumberland, Columbia, Lycoming, Sullivan and Montour Counties being visible from his place.

McKee has long been associated with the public life in St. Joseph county, whiter he came with his parents in 1865. During 17 years he was a member of the board of supervisors of Fawn River Township, and he was the chairman of the board during the building of the courthouse at Centerville, so that he has the honor of having his name inscribed on that building. He also serves as the superintendent of the township schools during a long period, and he is an active and influential worker in the ranks of the Democratic party. His splendid estate in Fawn River township contains 120 acres of valuable land.
Mr. McKee traces his ancestry on the paternal side to the time of the Revolutionary War, his great-grandfather serving with Washington in that struggle and was with him at Valley Forge. The grandfather was Captain James McKee, a valiant soldier of the War of 1812. William S. and Nancy (Ellis) McKee, the parents of William E. of this review, were from Columbia County Pennsylvania, the birthplace of the son on the 9th of November, 1844. They were also married in Columbia county and came from there in 1865 to LaGrange County, Indiana. The son William was reared on the home farm in Pennsylvania and when old enough assisted in its work and attended the neighborhood schools, later teaching during one term in Indiana. And he was married while in that state to Rose H. Forbes who was born in its county of LaGrange, and their five children are: Nellie E.; Mary E., wife of Mark Bordner; Rose, wife of Claude Van Vorst of St. Joseph county, Michigan; Edward F., who is married and living in Iowa; and Bessie B., the wife of Frank Spaid of Idaho. Mr. McKee is a member and a past noble grand of Sturgis Prairie Lodge, No. 37 I.O.O.F.

13. An excerpt from the History of Montour Co., PA written in 1887. Prior to 1850, Montour Co. was part of Columbia Co. This paragraph is about a place called Exchange. You will notice the names of James McKee and two Craig men. James McKee's mother is Agnes Craig.
"Walter JOHNSTON, father of William C. JOHNSTON, the clerk and recorder of the county, was the first hotel-keeper in Exchange--about 1839. He left there in 1840 and went to Jerseytown. Among the early settlers in this place was William CRAIG. The families of John and Alexander CRAIG are still in the place. James McKEE was another early settler. John BULL kept a hotel on the top of the hill, but his family are gone years ago. The house where he kept his hotel is still standing, though it has been closed as a place of entertainment for years. One of the old families living above the hill was that of Patrick MONTAGUE. David WILSON is now a man over 80 years of age; was among the early settlers. Charles CLARK (now a very old man) and family lived north of Exchange. His wife was a DERR. He opened the first store in Exchange, built his storeroom in 1838 and for a time boarded at Johnston's Hotel.

Bio of Stephen T. McKee.
During the many years he spent in the farming community of Lima, Stephen McKee was known for his progressiveness in everything he did and also for the energy which he applied to his undertakings and which brought him the abundant prosperity he now enjoys in his comfortable home at Howe.
Mr. McKee was born in Montour County, Pennsylvania, October 7, 1856, and has lived in LaGrange County since he was 8 years of age. His parents were William and Nancy (Ellis) McKee, both natives of Columbia County, Pennsylvania, while their respective parents were born in Scotland (Note by plb: this is in error) and spent their last years in Pennsylvania. William and Nancy McKee brought their family from Pennsylvania to LaGrange County in the spring of 1865. They traveled by railroad as far as Sturgis, Michigan, and thence a horse drawn vehicle took them to a place a little north of Howe, where they arrived the first of April. William McKee bought a farm in Lima Township and he and his wife lived there until their death. He had 80 acres and improved it and made a good home. He and his wife were active Presbyterians. Their family consisted of six children: James, who died in Pennsylvania; Ellis; Oliver P.; Amandas, now deceased; Elizabeth, deceased wife of Washington Gilbert, and Stephen T.
Stephen T. McKee attended country schools in LaGrange County and also the high school at Howe. As a young man he learned the trade of carpenter, but has used his skill largely to do his own building and repair work. He took up farming in Lima Township on his father's old place, later owned it, and increased its area to 120 acres. Mr. McKee equipped this farm for dairy purposes and developed one of the best Jersey herds in the township. His farm was also distinguished by having one of the first silos in that vicinity, and as a carpenter, he constructed the silo himself.
Mr. McKee has lived retired at Howe since 1902. He is a charter member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge at Howe, is a Presbyterian, and has been quite active in local politics, serving as a member of the Township Advisory Board.
On November 4, 1896, he married Miss Annabelle Smith, a native of Howe and a daughter of John Smith, one of the best known citizens of LaGrange County. Mr. and Mrs. McKee have one daughter, Mildred E., who finished her education in a college at Marion, Virginia.

79. Beloit Daily Call, Beloit, Mitchell, KS, "Obit." Milton S McKee
80. Beloit Daily Call, Beloit, KS, 11 Jan 1944 - Deaths, "Seth McKee."
The last chapter of a long and useful life closed for Seth McKee in Beloit, Kansas, December 31, 1944 at 8:30 p.m. Born to Anthony and Mary McKee on Oct. 22, 1852 at Minersville, Pa., he lived to be 92 years, 2 months and 9 days of age. When a child, he moved with his parents near Kankakee, Ill., where he grew to manhood. It was there he met and married Lydia Annette Havens, more familiarly known as "Nettie," on March 14, 1878, and where they lived for three years.
In Feb 1881 the young couple, with two small children, came to Kansas, locating on a farm southwest of Simpson, in Logan township, near the present Luther McClintock home, then later to the farm one half mile east and two miles north where they continued to reside until the death of the wife and mother on June 9, 1936.
Following the death of his wife, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Flossie Chapel and husband in Logan Co., Kansas near Monument, later coming to the home of his son, Harry and wife, in Eureka Township where he lived until Jan. 2, 1942 when he fell and fractured a hip. He was taken to the Community Hospital at Beloit, Kansas, where he received care for more than a year, then was moved to the private home of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Anderson who gave him kindly care the remainder of his life.
To this union were born ten children, one son having died in infancy, and a son, Clarence having preceded him in death on Jan. 12, 1934. The surviving children are: Harry H. and Howard V. of Asherville; Mrs. Flossie Chapel, of Monument, Kan.; Milton S., of Simpson; Clyde L. of Asherville, Mrs. Grace Laff of Portland, Oregon; Miss Ruth McKee of Oakley, Kan., and Mrs. Vola Templin of Clyde, Kan. Other surviving relatives are thirty grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who mourn his departure.
Mr. McKee was an upright citizen, honest in his dealings and clean of habits. His entire life until his accident was one of robust health except for an illness of typhoid fever many years ago.
He was a member of the Methodist Church of Simpson, Kansas, contributed largely in the building of the present chapel and gave freely of his time and talent in his younger days. Mr. McKee and his sons quarried the stone on their farm that was built into the large two-story house on the south divide that can be seen from miles around. The closing of this life's mission has removed one of Mitchell County's eldest residents.
Funeral services were conducted by Minister W.F. Little of the Beloit Methodist church on Wednesday, January 3rd, at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in Simpson, Kan. A quartet composed of Philip Louthan, Charley Deschner, Clifton Francis and Arnold Ostlund, sang the following songs: "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder," "No, Never Alone," and "Does Jesus Care." Mrs. Kate Shanks Simmons accompanied at the piano. Bearers were: Jens Asmussen, Joe Louthan, Frank Kerns, Miles Melton, Clyde Duvall and Willard McClintock. Burial was beside his companion in the Simpson Cemetery.
Beyond the sunset, O Blissful Morning,
When with our Savior, Heaven is Begun
Earth's Toiling Ended, O Glorious Dawning;
Beyond the Sunset, When Day is Done.
Beyond the Sunset, O Glad Reunion
With our Dear Loved Ones Gone Before;
In that Fair Homeland, We'll Know No Parting,
Beyond the Sunset, Forever More.

Lydia Annette Havens, daughter of Elisha and Julia Havens, was born at Delaware, Ohio, March 14, 1860, and passed away June 9, 1936, aged 76 years, 2 months, and 26 days. In 1864, she moved with her parents near Kankakee, Ill., where she lived and grew into womanhood having taught one term of school before marriage. On March 14, 1878 she was united in marriage to Seth McKee at the home of her parents. After living three years near Kankakee, they came to Mitchell County, Kansas arriving on February 20, 1881, locating southwest of Simpson, Kans., and have lived the past 41 years in their present home. To this union ten children were born, one son died in infancy and a son, Clarence, having preceded her in death on January 12, 1934. She is survived by her faithful companion, four sons and four daughters: Harry, Milton and Clyde of Asherville, Mrs. Flossie Chapel of Simpson, Mrs. Grace Laff of Beloit, Mrs. Vola Templin of Clyde, and Howard and Ruth of the home; one brother, Charles Havens of Atkinson, Nebraska, and three sisters: Mrs. Leonard Tracy and Miss Lillian Havens of Kankakee, Illinois, and Mrs. Mary Lokie of Littleton, Colo., 30 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends who mourn her departure.
On March 14, 1928, this esteemed couple observed their golden wedding anniversary that has left treasured memories for the family. For fifty-eight years they have journeyed together and have been privileged to rear their fine family, who have all resided near the parental home. One of the chief joys was when her family moved into the new home which was the scene of many happy gatherings and was hers to enjoy until the close of her life.
Mrs. McKee was a member of the Methodist Church of Simpson, Kansas, having faithfully attended until failing health prevented. Reigning joys and suffering of Gethsemane have been intermingled in her life. A beautiful mission of love, sacrifices and services has been fulfilled and the final summons has been answered.
Many years she dwelt here with us, Spent her life to serve our need;
Our dearest friend and best one, God's word her only creed.
Through we would keep her longer, Still, we think of the years,
His mercy has spared her to us, And drop our silent tears.
Each heart is filled with sorrow, No one can take her place,
Returned unto Him her spirit, And hidden from us her face.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the home with Rev. Platt of Beloit in charge. A quartet composed of M.M. Hougland, C.W. Deschner, Phil Louthan and C.L. Francis sang her favorite hymns. Pallbearers were: M.G. Johnson, Joe Louthan, Arthur Petterson, M.L. McClintock, Jeff Duvall and Frank Kerns. Internment was made in the Simpson Cemetery.

The event of a golden wedding anniversary comes to but a few who embark on the matrimonial sea and we are happy to tell of this glad day and rehearse a little of another happy day fifty years ago.

110. Stratton Family History by Ellen Stratton:
Walter Scott Stratton born in Missouri in Sept 1860 came to Colorado to work for the Burlington Railroad. He was in his middle 20's and had been a student at the University of Missouri. Mrs. Stratton, the former Mary Emily McKee, born December 5, 1863 in Kankakee, Illinois, also came to Akron in her 20s. She was a teacher in the Akron High School and later became the County Superintendent. At the time of their marriage, June 5, 1893, Mr. Stratton was the Washington County Treasurer. They lived several years in Akron, but later moved to Denver where Mr. Stratton attended the Law School of the University of Denver.
In approximately 1897 they moved to the Emerson Ranch at Hillrose, Colorado where Mr. Stratton was associated with Charles Emerson and his mother, Mrs. Emerson of Denver, in farming and stock raising. Later he purchased farms and grassland of his own, but was still primarily a stock raiser. The crops raised in the early years were mostly hay and small grains until after the building of Brush Sugar Factory at which time sugar beets were raised. Most of his land in Washington County was grassland with the exception of an irrigated farm near the Prewitt Reservoir.
The Strattons became the parents of six children. They were John M., Walter Scott, Jr., Doris, Rosemary, Ruth and Marjorie. The three oldest were born while the family lived in Akron. The other three were born in Morgan County. John M. is a graduate of the Law School at the University of Colorado. He also attended Cornell University in NY and holds a PhD degree from Columbia University. He lives in Greenwich, CT and maintains a law office in New York City.
Mrs. Doris Flynn, now living in Newcastle, CO is a graduate of the University of Colorado.
Walter S., Jr., graduated at Colorado A&M and was a county agent prior t
