The Story of Joel McKee
A South Dakota Pioneer As Told By Patty Bookout (to Gordon Meyer)
Copyrighted 2005 for Clark county South Dakota and Gordon Meyer
Joel has a very interesting Ancestry History. The first entry in the genealogy section is listed "Robert McKee" Robert served in the Revolutionary War, and is thought to have been with George Washington at Valley Forge.
McKEE was born in 1858 in Kankakee County, Illinois, the 6th of 8 children of Anthony Scout McKee and Mary Low. His great-grandfather was Robert McKee, born 11 Nov 1743 and died in Anthony Township, Montour, Pennsylvania on 27 Apr 1821. The birthplace of Robert is not yet known, but he migrated to Montour County in 1794 and located about a mile up the creek from Exchange, afterward moving to the Anthony Township area where he died. He served in the Revolutionary War and it is said he served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Joel’s great-grandmother was Nancy Agnes Craig born 1747 in Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania and died 27 Sep 1830 in Montour County, Pennsylvania. Robert and Agnes had 4 children, 3 of whom were John, James, and Elizabeth. John was born in 1783 and died in 1853 in Montour County. Elizabeth was born 1791 and died in 1843 also in Montour County.Upon the death of Anthony in 1876, Joel and his brother Leroy continued to work the family farm. Joel was still living at home in Otto Township, Kankakee, Illinois in 1883. In a letter his mother wrote to her oldest son, Sylvester, dated 26 Apr 1883, she wrote: “The boys have their oats in and are plowing for corn…..The boys have put a new wire fence around the pasture……Tommy McQuellin has gone to Dakota and has taken a claim of 160 acres of land, good land he says it is. He says it will all be taken soon.” And although we can only assume this Tommy McQuellin was a neighbor of theirs in Illinois, it might be that Joel may have gone to South Dakota to see his friend. In the Bureau of Land Records, we found a Thomas H. McQuillin homesteaded 160 acres in Myron Township, Faulk County, South Dakota and the patent was issued 10 Mar 1887. We do know from Joel’s obituary that he moved to Bradley, South Dakota in the fall of 1887.
Joel died of a Cerebral Hemorrhage and is buried in Prairie Hill Cemetery in Bradley. In his Last Will and Testament dated 16 Feb 1915, he left one dollar and his love and affection to his siblings, Sylvester, Hattie, Seth and Emma. Everything else he gave to his sister, Susan A. McKee who was living in Los Angeles, California at the time. Susan was also his executrix. We have been told that Susan suffered from Scarlet Fever as a child and may have been struck deaf and mute as a result. She suffered from breast cancer in 1922 while living in California, and died 31 May 1924 while living with her sister, Mary Emily “Emma” McKee Stratton in Hillrose, Colorado. Susan’s Will dated 5 Apr 1924, left one dollar and her love and affection to each of her siblings, Sylvester and Seth and to the children of her deceased brother, Roy (Leroy). To her sister, Harriet E. McKee of Howe, Indiana, “the South 82 feet of Lot 5, Block 1, and the South 82 feet of Lot six, Block 1, of the town of Bradley, Clark County, South Dakota, and being the only real estate I own or am interested in, located within said town of Bradley….” All of the rest of her estate including the farm located in Clark County, South Dakota, “which is legally described as, Lots l, 2, 3, and 4, of Section 18 in Township 118, North of Range 56 West and containing 161 acres” was given to her sister, Mary E. Stratton of Hillrose, Morgan, Colorado. Mary was also appointed executrix.
Joel McKee
died 21
Apr 1915
in
Bradley,
at age 57.
His
obituary
was
printed in
the 29 Apr. 1915 edition of
The
Bradley Globe.
“The
funeral
services
for the
late Joel
McKee were
held at
the
Workmen
hall on
Friday
afternoon
at two o’clock.
The hall
was
appropriately
decorated
and was
nicely
filled
with
friends
who were
called
together
to pay
their last
respects
to their
fellow
townsman.
Rev. E. B.
Cooney of
the
Methodist
Church,
preached
the
funeral
discourse.
The
members of
the
Workmen
and I.O.O.F.
lodges, of
which he
was an
active
member,
attended
in a body
and
marched to
the
cemetery
where the
latter
lodge
performed
the last
rites over
the grave.
The floral
offerings
were
beautiful.
Joel McKee
was born
to the
union of
Anthony
and Mary
Low McKee
in 1858,
at
Kankakee,
Ill., and
died at
his home
in
Bradley,
S.D., on
April
21st,
1915, aged
57 years.
His
parents
were
Methodists
and at an
early age
he was
baptized
into that
faith. He
came to
Bradley in
the fall
of ’87
and for
years
plied his
trade of a
carpenter.
Many of
the
buildings
destroyed
by the
fire some
years ago
were the
result of
his work
here. He
made this
his home,
running a
small
store here
after the
town was
built up
so that
his line
of work
became
slack.
Being of a
mechanical
turn, he
went east
and
engaged in
the
plumbing
and
waterworks
business
being sent
to this
state at
the head
of a gang
a little
later to
install
systems of
waterworks
by one of
the large
eastern
firms.
Later he
gave up
this work
and came
back to
Bradley to
engage in
the grain
business,
owning
elevators
at James,
Garden
City,
Wallace
and
Bradley.
These he
sold off
one by one
until the
last two
years he
has been
out of
business.
He was
single,
having
never
married,
and leaves
to mourn
his death,
two
brothers,
Sylvester
McKee of
Oakland,
Cal., and
Seth McKee
of
Simpson,
Kan., and
three
sisters,
Mrs.
Hattie
McKee of
Howe,
Ind., Mrs.
W. S.
Stratton
of
Boulder,
Col., and
Miss Susan
McKee of
Oakland,
Cal., the
latter
being the
only
present at
the
funeral.
Joel
leaves a
host of
friends
here, for
his life
was
interwoven
with the
history of
our little
city.
Always
ready with
a smile
and cheery
word for
everyone,
he had
become a
fixture in
our
community
that it
will be
hard to
get along
without. A
finer
tribute
could not
have been
paid than
the
presence
of so many
men at the
funeral,
fully
seventy-five
marching
to the
cemetery.”
Following
his
obituary
was a Card
of Thanks
from his
sister,
Susan; and
Resolutions
from the
Bradley
Lodge No.
12,
Ancient
Order of
United
Workmen.
Also
in the
same paper
under
local
news:
“Frank

funeral.” “Ole

and Ole Rolland
of

before
returning
to

JACKSON P.
MCKEE,
farmer, P.
O. Comly,
was born
in the
place
where he
now
resides in
Anthony
Township,
Montour
Co., PA,
Oct. 12,
1830, son
of James
and
Harriet
(SCOUT)
McKee, the
latter a
native of
this
county.
Robert
McKee,
grandfather
of our
subject,
came to
what is
now
Montour
County in
1794 and
located
about a
mile up
the creek
from
Exchange,
afterward
moving to
the place
where
Jackson P.
now
resides
and here
lived
until his
death. He
was
married to
Agnes
Craig and
died in
1832, his
widow
surviving
him about
4 years;
they are
buried at
the Derry
Presbyterian
Church.
They had 4
children
of whom
only one,
James, was
married.
Robert
McKee
served in
the
Revolutionary
war. James
McKee,
father of
our
subject,
was born
in Chester
County, PA
and was
the 3rd in
order of
age of the
children
born of
Robert
McKee. He
was eight
years of
age when
the family
came to
this
county and
when he
grew up,
his
father,
brothers
and
himself
bought
between
400 and
500 acres
of land,
of which
Jackson P.
now owns
195 acres.
They found
this land
covered
with a
heavy
growth of
oak
timber,
and they
struck the
first ax
into the
improvement
of this
land and
put up a
log cabin
on this
place with
the timber
they had
cut down
in making
the first
clearing.
James
McKee died
March 29,
1863, his
wife
having
died in
1832. They
were the
parents of
11
children,
of whom
only two
are
living:
James and
Jackson
P.; the
latter
being the
only one
in this
county.
Our
subject
was
married
February
2, 1863 to
Margaret
Ellen,
daughter
of David
Wilson,
also a
member of
an early
settler
family and
who is now
living in
Anthony
Twp, this
county.
Mr. McKee
learned
the
carpenter's
trade
which he
followed
one year.
He was
general
agent for
the
Buckeye
reaper
when it
first came
out and
followed
that
business
three or
four
years,
having
entire
control of
their
agents
during
that time.
He was in
Kankakee,
IL 15
months and
there
owned land
at that
time. Mr.
McKee's
home is
situated
on Muncy
Hill and
it
presents
the finest
view in
PA, the
valleys in
Snyder,
Union,
Northumberland,
Columbia,
Lycoming,
Sullivan
and
Montour
Counties
being
visible
from his
place.

Bio of
Stephen T.
McKee.
During the
many years
he spent
in the
farming
community
of Lima,
Stephen
McKee was
known for
his
progressiveness
in
everything
he did and
also for
the energy
which he
applied to
his
undertakings
and which
brought
him the
abundant
prosperity
he now
enjoys in
his
comfortable
home at
Howe.
Mr. McKee
was born
in Montour
County,
Pennsylvania,
October 7,
1856, and
has lived
in
LaGrange
County
since he
was 8
years of
age. His
parents
were
William
and Nancy
(Ellis)
McKee,
both
natives of
Columbia
County,
Pennsylvania,
while
their
respective
parents
were born
in
Scotland
(Note by
plb: this
is in
error) and
spent
their last
years in
Pennsylvania.
William
and Nancy
McKee
brought
their
family
from
Pennsylvania
to
LaGrange
County in
the spring
of 1865.
They
traveled
by
railroad
as far as
Sturgis,
Michigan,
and thence
a horse
drawn
vehicle
took them
to a place
a little
north of
Howe,
where they
arrived
the first
of April.
William
McKee
bought a
farm in
Lima
Township
and he and
his wife
lived
there
until
their
death. He
had 80
acres and
improved
it and
made a
good home.
He and his
wife were
active
Presbyterians.
Their
family
consisted
of six
children:
James, who
died in
Pennsylvania;
Ellis;
Oliver P.;
Amandas,
now
deceased;
Elizabeth,
deceased
wife of
Washington
Gilbert,
and
Stephen T.
Stephen T.
McKee
attended
country
schools in
LaGrange
County and
also the
high
school at

young man
he learned
the trade
of
carpenter,
but has
used his
skill
largely to
do his own
building
and repair
work. He
took up
farming in
Lima
Township
on his
father's
old place,
later
owned it,
and
increased

The last
chapter of
a long and
useful
life
closed for
Seth McKee
in Beloit,
Kansas,
December
31, 1944
at 8:30
p.m. Born
to Anthony
and Mary
McKee on
Oct. 22,
1852 at
Minersville,
Pa., he
lived to
be 92
years, 2
months and
9 days of
age. When
a child,
he moved
with his
parents
near
Kankakee,
Ill.,
where he
grew to
manhood.
It was
there he
met and
married
Lydia
Annette
Havens,
more
familiarly
known as
"Nettie,"
on March
14, 1878,
and where
they lived
for three
years.
In Feb
1881 the
young
couple,
with two
small
children,
came to
Kansas,
locating
on a farm
southwest
of
Simpson,
in Logan
township,
near the
present
Luther
McClintock
home, then
later to
the farm
one half
mile east
and two
miles
north
where they
continued
to reside
until the
death of
the wife
and mother
on June 9,
1936.
Following
the death
of his
wife, he
made his
home with
his
daughter,
Mrs.
Flossie
Chapel and
husband in
Logan Co.,
Kansas
near
Monument,
later
coming to
the home
of his
son, Harry
and wife,
in Eureka
Township
where he
lived
until Jan.
2, 1942
when he
fell and
fractured
a hip. He
was taken
to the
Community
Hospital
at Beloit,
Kansas,
where he
received
care for
more than
a year,
then was
moved to
the
private
home of
Mr. and
Mrs. Ellis
Anderson
who gave
him kindly
care the
remainder
of his
life.
To this
union were
born ten
children,
one son
having
died in
infancy,
and a son,
Clarence
having
preceded
him in
death on
Jan. 12,
1934. The
surviving
children
are: Harry
H. and
Howard V.
of
Asherville;
Mrs.
Flossie
Chapel, of
Monument,
Kan.;
Milton S.,
of
Simpson;
Clyde L.
of
Asherville,
Mrs. Grace
Laff of
Portland,
Oregon;
Miss Ruth
McKee of
Oakley,
Kan., and
Mrs. Vola
Templin of
Clyde,
Kan. Other
surviving
relatives
are thirty
grandchildren,
eighteen
great-grandchildren,
nieces and
nephews,
and a host
of friends
who mourn
his
departure.
Mr. McKee
was an
upright
citizen,
honest in
his
dealings
and clean
of habits.
His entire
life until
his
accident
was one of
robust
health
except for
an illness
of typhoid
fever many
years ago.
He was a
member of
the
Methodist
Church of
Simpson,
Kansas,
contributed
largely in
the
building
of the
present
chapel and
gave
freely of
his time
and talent
in his
younger
days. Mr.
McKee and
his sons
quarried
the stone
on their
farm that
was built
into the
large
two-story
house on
the south
divide
that can
be seen
from miles
around.
The
closing of
this
life's
mission
has
removed
one of
Mitchell
County's
eldest
residents.
Funeral
services
were
conducted
by
Minister
W.F.
Little of
the Beloit
Methodist

Still, we

And hidden
from us
her face.

Golden

Mr. and

celebrated
their
Golden
Wedding
anniversary
last
Wednesday,
March 14,
at their
country
home. The
event of a
golden
wedding
anniversary
comes to
but a few
who embark
on the
matrimonial
sea and we
are happy
to tell of
this glad
day and
rehearse a
little of
another
happy day
fifty
years ago.
The
children
of this
fine
elderly
couple
planned a
big, big
seven
o'clock
dinner and
a few
surprises
in honor
of the
event. At
five
o'clock,
relatives
and
friends
began to
arrive and
with them
they
brought a
fine
walnut

gift for
the
"bride

groom"
of fifty
years.
A place
was found
for the
new
furniture
in the
dining
room and
soon the
table was
laden with
a feast
fit for
any bride
and groom.
A pretty
three-tier
angel food
cake iced
in white
with
yellow-trimmings,
having
fifty
small
white
candles in
yellow
holders,
graced the
center of
the long

The honor
guests at
this
celebration
were Mr.

Mrs.

being a

Mr. McKee.
This was
the first
time Mr.

Mr. and

and Mr.
and Mrs.

who were
served at
a side

lovely
bouquet of
roses
centered
their
table.
A very
pleasant
evening
was spent
after the
dinner,
visiting
and
listening
to
happenings
of fifty

To
complete
the Golden
Wedding
spirit,
some of
the folks
sang,
"Put
On Your
Old Grey
Bonnet,"
"When
You and I
Were
Young,
Maggie,"
etc.
Now, let's
slip back
with this
"bride
