Welcome To Ziebach County, South Dakota!

Ziebach County was established on Feb 1, 1911, comprised of the former counties of Schnasse, Armstong and Sterling. It was named after Frank M. Ziebach, who founded several newspapers in the Iowa and Dakota areas and was known as the squatter governor of the Dakotas. The highest population of the county, according to the US Census, was a little over 4000 people in 1930. Almost the entire county lies within the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation and is one of five counties in the state to do so. Ziebach is the last county alphabetically in the United States. It has two cities and several unincorporated communities. The county seat is Dupree.
